The Family

The Smales family have farmed at Thornton since 1948 and in 1996 the farm of West Allerdean was added making a total of 279 hectares.

Organic Conversion began in the spring of 1998 at West Allerdean and Thornton followed between April and July 2002 becoming fully organic overall in July 2004. We are registered with Organic Farmers & Growers as UKFO 40517, licensed to grow organic crops, process, clean and store organic produce for third parties.

As the fortunes of farming have changed over the years we have tried to diversify in different ways.

Smales Secure Storage

Smales Secure Storage was hatched in March 2001 with two containers and has grown to 140 storage spaces with a cross section of customers ranging from small businesses, private individuals, archive and document storage.

Smales Organic Seeds

Lastly Smales Organic Seeds has been in production since 2002, growing, certifying and packing our own produce selling direct to the organic farmer
therefore providing complete traceability.

The Thornton Team

The "Thornton Team" numbers five, Jane at
the helm, Malcolm head of technical and arable
operations, Anna in charge of grain storage
and seed production & numbers, Laura principally looks after the secure storage and Grace in the office.

Skylark Cottage

We have a holiday cottage situated on the Farm which can comfortably sleep 6 people. It is furnished to a high standard and has a large private garden with outlooks to fields and beyond. The Cottage is pet friendly and available for short or long stays.
